Bunkers

The bunkers on the 14th are really starting to take shape! Now all turfed, once rooted in will be trimmed and shaped! Great job by all the green staff.

Greens Update

There was a question/proposal at the AGM regarding the current local rules regarding bunkers and in particular about abolishing the maximum 9 iron local rule when a bunker is out of play as it was felt to be an unfair rule.

We have reflected on the topic and taken into account current course conditions in the continued inclement weather. With immediate effect the following Local Rules will apply for all bunkers whilst the extremely wet conditions persist:

• All bunkers will be “rake and place” unless specifically marked as GUR with a “white stake”.
• The right greenside bunkers on the 1st and 2nd holes are unfortunately regularly saturated, making it almost impossible to “rake and place”, so to address the problem we have decided to put “white stakes” in these two bunkers until conditions improve.
• Similarly the left greenside bunker on the 17th will be reviewed and if the water retention problem persists here as well then this bunker will also be “white staked” and therefore designated as GUR.
• The three bunkers on the 14th in the proximity of the green which are currently having maintenance work undertaken on them will also have “white stakes” in them and should be treated as GUR.
• We will endeavour to undertake regular inspections of bunker conditions to determine whether additional “white stakes” may be required.

When extreme weather conditions dictate and further bunkers are impacted we will look to take decisions to take bunkers out of play and make them all GUR whilst conditions dictate.

Can I also take this opportunity to ask all to reinforce with all the local rules regarding GUR and taking relief.

• Firstly unless specifically marked as compulsory (e.g. Keeping off new turf/seeded areas) all GUR at HGGC is and always has been non-compulsory and a player may therefore choose to play from the area of GUR or take relief.
• Please use common sense if choosing to play from GUR and do not do so if you are likely to create unnecessary damage to the ground condition.
• The local rule also applies to bunkers if marked as GUR, so a golfer may still choose to “rake and place” and play their ball from within a bunker rather than taking relief.
• If you decide to take optional relief from GUR, you may do so without penalty and the ball must be played from within one club length of the nearest point of relief no nearer the hole.
• As one player’s view on the nearest point of relief may differ to others, it is advisable to consult with and agree with your playing partners the nearest point of relief before playing in order to avoid dispute or a rule infringement.

I hope these Local Rules and clarifications help all whilst we continue to experience the heavy rainfalls that are impacting the condition of our bunkers.

HGGC PGA Charity Pro-Am - Friday, 13 July 2018

Hazel Grove Golf Club will be hosting their annual Charity PGA Pro-Am next year on Friday, 13 July 2018 (so plenty of time to save the date). The cost of entering a team of 3 is just £299 and your fourth team member will be a PGA Professional. Your PGA Professional will be with you for the best part of the day, sharing their golfing knowledge and experiences which will definitely benefit your team.

HOW IT WORKS
On arrival you will allocated a PGA Pro to your team (of 3 amateurs), you’ll spend some time getting to know your Pro, then off you go – just treat the game like a casual round of golf. There will be 2 competitions running at the same time. One for the team as a whole and one for the Pros who will be entering their own competition alongside the team comp, the Pro will be focussed on his/her own game as there is a substantial Pro’s Prize Fund at the end but it really is a remarkable experience.

If you’ve ever thought of playing in a Pro-Am and haven’t got round to it yet, then you should strongly consider playing in this one.

It’s a great day all round and also a good way for businesses to entertain customers/reward staff for just £100 per person (think of the cost of playing 9 or 18 holes with a Pro!). For £100 you will be playing in a fantastic comp, with 18 holes of golf, bacon sandwich/coffee, good camaraderie and a meal after the game – this is excellent value and one not to be missed, plus you’ll have the opportunity to meet lots of other people/professionals and win prizes. This is open to any golfer of a reasonable standard (Ladies and Gents).
