Club Update Do you agree the summer weather we have had so far is bringing out the best in our course? Can I start this short update with a huge thanks to Mike Davie and his team, along with Mick Jones our Greens Director, for presenting the course so well to all our members and visitors. Long may this hot spell continue. You would think with the course in such good shape that Captain’s weekend was coming up. And you’re right. I do want to see everything at its best. This year we have introduced a change, as it will be played over two successive Saturdays starting on the 16th June. The second Saturday on the 23rd will see the top 30 from Day 1 going out at the end of the field. Everyone else can play as normal. My hope is we will have a full balcony supporting the leading players and willing them on to victory. Please stay around, when you have finished your round. Or come down earlier before the evening’s dinner dance for an extended pre-drinks. I will be at the halfway hut on both days. I will be providing a BBQ on the 16th, with light refreshments and the odd beverage. There will be also be savories and cold snacks and drinks on the 23rd. Can I bring your attention to some sheets up in the clubhouse. These are asking for volunteers to help me and my family on both days. I know Lady Captain and President are mustering support from their ranks, but I would be extremely grateful for an hour or two of anyone else’s time – especially on the 16th to help with the BBQ. Equally, if anyone has a gas BBQ you wouldn’t mind lending out for the day, please let me know. There is still time to book your place for the evening’s soiree on the 23rd. We are up to the 100 mark and I can promise a great night. It is billed as ‘Casual’ so why not come along with friends and family and be part of the fun. More widely, if I can take the time to signpost one or two other events that are coming up: • 21st June: If you are an early bird you might wish to join the ‘Summer Solstice’ breakfast club. 18 holes of golf from first light around 4:30 followed by breakfast in the bar. I even provide a yard of string to turn tiddlers on the green into birdies or pars. Curious? Please sign up on BRS and let Kathy Glazier know. • 21st June: The ‘Skippers Mates’ from the Grove will be undertaking the Macmillan Longest Day Golf Challenge playing 4 rounds of golf in the day to raise funds for Macmillan Support. Captain, Vice-Captain, Mick Jones and Pete Allen will take on Bramhall Park, Romiley, Davenport and Hazel Grove. There are pledge forms around the club and we would be very grateful for any donations you might offer. • Our President will be hosting her day on 21st July: In the evening there will be a Dinner Dance starring the fabulous Julie Gold. Julie is a saxophonist with an outstanding voice and is back by popular demand. Her play list includes everything from 60’s classics to modern day pop. This is booking up fast and I hope you will give Pauline your full support. There are still places available on My Captains away day at Linkdrick golf club on Friday 24th April. Ask James for more information or put your names down on the sheet in the pro shop.
Thank you. Let’s make this a summer at the Grove to remember.

How’s your game holding up?
If your golf game hasn’t got off to a great start this year, it’s time to do something about it. Going out on the golf course week after week and doing the same things will rarely lead to success and, if anything, will result in you getting frustrated. |
We have years of experience and the expert knowledge to help you with every part of your game, and with more great weather and golf on the horizon; now is a great time to consider some lessons or upgrading your equipment. We are currently running our Complete Equipment Solution promotion where we are offering to custom fit you for FREE and give you a FREE after-sales lesson once your new clubs arrive. However, this will only last until the end of the month so don't delay it any longer. Click here to learn more. |

Ryder Cup hopefuls staking their claim The final leaderboard at last week’s Italian Open made for interesting reading. Home favourite Francesco Molinari was attempting back-to-back victories after his previous week’s triumph at Wentworth but had to settle for second place, one behind Thorbjørn Olesen who captured his fifth European Tour title in the process. Both golfers will have their eyes firmly set on a place in Europe’s Ryder Cup team come September as well as several top-10 finishers from the Italian Open such as Cabrera-Bello, Sullivan, Poulter and Willett. Someone else looking to compete in Paris is young American Bryson DeChambeau who conjured up a timely victory at the Memorial Tournament. There were several stories at the beginning of the week including Justin Rose’s opportunity to rise to the top of the world rankings with a win (he finished T6) and Tiger Woods’ latest event of his eye-catching comeback (he led the field in several tee-to-green categories but faced putting woes throughout the week to end up six shots back), but DeChambeau stole the headlines with his playoff win to secure PGA title number two. |
We’re sure the majority of you will agree that having a distance device on the course is a huge benefit, going hand-in-hand with knowing how far you hit each club. For those of you in the market for a laser rangefinder or GPS device, here are a few options within Garmin’s range to suit different preferences. |
Pinpoint laser accuracy There's one standout feature to Garmin's Z80 laser rangefinder that sets it apart from all others on the market. As well as giving precise distances up to 350 yards away, the Z80 also includes hole maps that are integrated into the viewfinder, which display the shape of the hole and provide front and back distances when you lock on to the flag. |
|
Information at a glance If you prefer wearable technology, Garmin has both GPS watches and bands to suit all styles. The Approach S60 watch, seen here on the left, boasts colour hole maps, hazard information and offers front, middle and back yardages. The other, the Approach X40 band, is a slim, lightweight and waterproof wristband that gives you distances to the green and to hazards, as well as heart rate and activity tracking. |
