Last Sundays Winter League Round Up From Mike Booth Match week 3 focuses on the Plate this week, with a full complement of matches completed in the balmy conditions that greeted us at The Grove. Game of the day was between the Heyes and Walters pairing, up against Levis and the much practiced Thorley. Two up and three from home was the state of play before Levis and Thorley finally imploded. However, they still had opportunity to half the match with a final 'two foot' putt (not given - oops, what goes around, comes around, I think!) Unfortunately, it slid by the hole - They have my deepest heartfelt sympathy - It hurts boys, doesn't it! Top of the group and three wins from three now for the Baby Bear and the Magnificent One. Major and stand in Baines (can't believe Marshall chose a tin pot football final over Winter League), had a comfortable victory over The Stewardson's (who had to rush off to watch the only football game of significance later in the day). Also in The Plate there were victories for Barlow and Brown over the The Silver Foxes who've surprisingly lost two from two. Booth and Blain continue to demonstrate that last year’s heady days were something of a fluke, with a third successive defeat, this time to The Captain (Kirk) and impressive stand-in Carson Williams (who sadly looks nothing like Mr Spock). It was Cougar town in The Hackers Division as Shannon turned to another of his Harem following the successful outcome of last week’s outing. Julie Jones was unable to have the same influence however, as Walters and Tallents continue to look impressive in the division with their second win in two. Also with two wins from two are Bailey and Stevens after claiming a no-show victory last week over the Whites', this week saw Stevens and former winter leaguer stand-in - Andy Johnson too strong for Knight and Tracey Slater. A valiant effort from Whistling Paul Benson who single handedly took on Ivor and The Big Dog. A great effort here as finally succumbing two and one. The Slicers Division saw a close game between The VV's and the Cole / Booth pairing. The VV's - now known as 'The Twighlighters' (because most of their games seem to finish at this time) were two up with two to play, however a fine fightback from their opposition finished the match all-square. Cole clearly starting to pay back some of the big money transfer fee. With Glazier and Tew having to give shots to their opposition (yes, you didn't miss-read), it was a close encounter until Taylor and Stewardson finally came through to take all the points. Front runners in the division are now 'the old time music hall' pairing of Beswick and Allen who defeated Moss and Jones on the sixteenth, to head the group with three wins from three. There were only two games in the Superleague today. Greenall and Tetlow (again the older variety) were too strong for Jackson and Lord as they opened their win account in the top division. The other big game of the day was the match up between PP and The Shark who took on Hunt and The Pot Hunting Johnson. After battling back from a bad start PP & Shark were unable to maintain the momentum and eventually fell to a disappointing defeat. If someone could tell the Pot Hunter he won today, as he'll have absolutely no recollection of the result, where he was playing, what day it is and who I am. The good news is that his membership application has now been accepted by the the Alzheimer's Society. That's all for this week - Only 4 weeks to go until we crown this year’s Champions. Remember - The final matches MUST be completed the morning of Sunday 7th April. We would also appreciate if everyone makes every effort to play that morning and we can properly celebrate the competition and the victors following those matches.
