Mike Booth's Winter League Round-up (Final Round – Week 1) As the start of the final round got underway, apologies for the slight delay in the issuing of this report. The reason being that both Worzel and The Crowman were out celebrating a much awaited victory over the Judge and stand-in Serviceman (the double teapot variety). These celebrations paled into insignificance however when compared to the first ever point secured in Winter League by Big D and Daddy Elwers. Their shared point with Lord Jackson led to endless bottles of champagne, whooping, hollering and high fiving! Roll on their first victory! Also in the Hackers Division Hallows Be Thy Name and That Man Clayton lost their much vaunted “Never been beaten in February” tag. This run stretching back as far as the end of January as they crashed to defeat to The Chuckle Brothers, who now top the Table after week one. Up into The Slicers Division, we had some ‘happy halves’ to start the group. Shot Dad and Pebbles finishing all square with The Music Hall Impresarios. Meanwhile those Nearly Herbs ground out a hard fought half with Captain and Pro. The only positive result saw Angry Gnat and The Deadly Dentist beating Bennett and Stand in Penny. This result seeing them sitting proudly at the top of the division. They were queueing up to get into the Plate this year, no-one more so than The Lilliputians. In honour and acknowledgement of their fine effort in qualifying for the Plate once again this year, there have been moves afoot to rename the Plate division ‘The Melvin’. Their first run out this year could only see them gaining a half after slugging it out with Van Barneveld and NonameMorris. Elsewhere in the division – Noisy Scouse Git and The Why Aye Man gave me a very long, interesting and detailed report of their match versus The Smiling Assassins – Not sure what the result was though, but it sounded good! The Zebras were re-united for their big match versus The Titans. Rumour has it that they needed introducing to each other prior to their match and eventual win. The Middle-aged Prentenders put The Twilighters in their place to start the group with a win. In the final match The Taxman and Keyworth must have won their match as the Taxman was waxing lyrically about the incredible length of his... putting - I think, although, again I wasn’t really listening properly. Leaving the Big Boys until last this week. The rather strong looking (with the odd exception) Super League began with a couple of tasty fixtures. Mongo and Muttley faced Oddjob and Young Charles in an intriguing match up that saw Mongo and Muttley taking the first week spoils. With The Household Appliance away for a service, PP turned to the perennial substitute “Ears” or is it Flora (he spreads himself pretty thinly). It was not to be however, as reversal of the first half result saw the ‘much fancied’ (by themselves) – Prof & Plod pick up the three points. Final result of the day was a dramatic win for Alas Moss and Jones over The Window Fitter and The Space Cadet. Despite leading for virtually the whole round, Danny Boy dealt the crushing blow with a fifteen foot birdie on the last to win. Not a bad start... For some!
