Greetings from James Rowlands | Hazel Grove Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional | Hello golfers,
Greens Update - Mysterious White Circles by Mick Jones
If you have played at HGGC over the last few days you may have noticed the appearance of a large white circle on each of the holes. To put an end to the mystery the Greens staff have started preparation of an "Emergency Winter Hole" on each of our 18 holes.
Why are we doing this?
We have made very positive progress with our Greens Recovery Programme over recent weeks. A lot of hard work has gone into the greens with the micro tining, top dressing and fertilisation as should have been witnessed by all. We are really pleased with the outcome to date and the condition of the greens is actually ahead of our expectations when we commenced the programme.
Testimony was the excellent condition of the course and importantly the greens for Presidents, which is fantastic news.
Whilst it is our intent to stay playing on our greens throughout the winter as per normal we will, in the event of adverse weather conditions which will or may detrimentally damage greens, take decisions to use the Emergency Winter Holes as necessary in order to protect our greens (e.g. in particular sustained heavy frost over a number of days). We do not want to undo all the good work achieved this year on the Greens Recovery Programme.
At the moment the "Emergency Winter Holes" should continue to be treated as a normal integral part of the course and the ball played as it lies. However, towards the end of September all areas encircled by the white lines will be treated as Ground Under Repair (GUR) and relief must be taken as per rule 25.1 (i.e. The player must drop the ball without penalty within one club length of the nearest point of relief and not nearer the hole than the nearest point of relief). This will help preparation and improve the quality of the "Emergency Winter Holes" should they be required.
Appropriate instructions will be issued nearer the time.
I trust this clarifies our intent and answers the questions arising from the membership. Should anyone require further information or clarification then please do not hesitate to contact me.
