Hello golfers,

Coaching news

Lee Sullivan joins the HGGC Team to offer his expertise on putting!

Lee started his golfing journey aged 13 years old in his birth place of Liverpool. As a junior golfer he joined Bootle Municipal Golf Club where he was bitten by the golfing bug. After a couple of years learning to improve his golf, he got the opportunity to join The West Lancashire Golf Club on what is now part of the duly named, 'Golf Coast'. West Lancashire is a private members golf club and was founded in 1873. The club has hosted numerous final qualifying rounds for The Open together with top amateur events such as The Brabzon Trophy.

The day came when Lee decided he wanted to make the switch from the amateur ranks and become a Golf Professional. A decision to enrol on the three year PGA training programme took him on a journey to Kent. Lee spent two years work, learning and studying away from home under the guidance of his PGA training professional and returned back to the North West to complete his third and final year as PGA Assistant Professional at Romiley Golf Club. Lee succeeded in becoming a fully Qualified PGA Golf Professional at the end of 2001 and two years later Lee successfully became the Head Club Professional at Romiley Golf Club.

LeeSince making the decision to leave a Head Club Professionals role to pursue a career in coaching, Lee has spent the last four years solely focusing on coaching putting 'The Game, within a Game'. Previously to joining my team at Hazel Grove, Lee has spent the last three years working and helping to set-up and establish a local company called Raa Putters Ltd. The company is a U.K. putter manufacturing company who specialise in custom-built putters and are based locally in Macclesfield.

Lee brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in golf with him to Hazel grove and is steadily building his reputation as a well-respected performance putting coach. He has and does work with many touring professionals including European Tour, European Senior Tour and Ladies European Tour Players as well as PGA Golf Professionals & Elite Amateurs, not forgetting his most important clients being the everyday club golfers, men, women and juniors.

Lee believes the fastest way to lower scores is by learning to become a better putter, simple. To arrange a putting session with Lee please contact him on 07759 917 518 or email Lee on lee@18putts.com

Avoiding Slow Play

Slow play is increasingly becoming a problem at many clubs, is raising discontent among members and on some occasions it is putting people off from playing golf. Here are some simple tips of ways players can avoid it.

Slow play tip 1: The main cause of slow play is golfers not being prepared to play when it is their turn. Members of a group should not travel as a pack, with all members walking together to the first ball, then the second, and so on. Each member of the group should walk directly to his own ball and be ready to play when it is their turn.

Slow play tip 2: When waiting on the tee for the group in front to clear the fairway don't be so strict about order of play. Let the short hitter - who can't reach the group ahead anyway - go ahead and hit.

Repairing Pitch Marks On The Greens by Mick Jones

A recent inspection of our greens on a Thursday morning showed lots of unrepaired Pitch Marks on our greens. This inspection followed all sections having competitions on the preceding 5 days with minimal visitors. i.e. We as members are not being diligent enough in identifying and repairing Pitch Marks as we should be.

A Pitch Mark only takes a few seconds to fix correctly however, a Pitch Mark repaired incorrectly or not at all takes over 3 weeks to heal.

Please study and understand these guidelines on how to correctly repair Pitch Marks. Correct repair will help protect the grass root system and our greens and benefit all members and visitors to our course.

Course Update by Mick Jones

Greens maintenance week took place week commencing Monday 10th August. All greens were micro tined, top dressed and over seeded as required. We had a great turnout of volunteers on the Monday helping to clear the tines. This enabled us to complete the task ahead of the planned schedule. MANY THANKS to all who helped.

The tasks undertaken through summer on the Greens Recovery Programme are showing fruition and the greens recovery is further ahead than anticipated when we commenced. We have definitely benefitted from doing greens maintenance and micro tining in August (rather than in late Sept/Oct as in previous years) giving greens time to rapidly recover in good growing/soil conditions. Our recommendation and intention is to do greens maintenance and micro tining in April and August going forward.

As a result Mike Davie believes we will enter the winter months with greens that are stronger and with the best coverage that we have had for a few years.
